Emotional Night for the St. John’s Women’s Team in Victory Against Providence

It was a night filled with emotions and passion as the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team (12-9, 2-8 BIG EAST) defeated Providence (9-14, 2-8 BIG EAST) by a final of 62-55.

The ladies needed to comeback in the Second Half as Providence was able to build a 24-23 lead at the Half.

It was when the Red Storm returned from the Half that a stellar performance by Junior Skye Owen, in lifting the team to the victory.

Owen started to hit several clutch three-pointers, including a trey at the 6:48 mark in one of the more vital moments of the game.

To conclude the fourth quarter, Owen scored 11 points, that included three triples in the final 6:51 of regulaton.

How much of a comeback did the Red Storm orchestrate against the Friars, well the ladies were able to see a 12-point third quarter Providence lead disappear and went on a 29-8 run.

Owen finished the night with an incredible 17 points to lead the way in scoring and she was followed by Lashae Dwyer as she finished the game with 16 points. Jailah Donald impressed many with her overall performance and was able to contribute with 11 points.

Providence was impressive in the game and is going to be a team to watch for as the rest of the BIG EAST Conference play progresses.

The Friars had several big shots that were connected during the course of the game, including clutch shots by Brynn Farrell. Leading the way in scoring for Providence was Olivia Olsen with her 14 points.

One of the more impressive stats of the night was the fact that the ladies were able to create six points off turnovers, as the Red Storm defense was one of the biggest reasons for the W.

Also impressive was the fact that the Red Storm was able to outrebound the Friars by a total of 8-6 and used the speed and impressive passing ability to thrill the crowd at Carnesecca Arena.

This was a much-needed victory for the ladies as they were able to snap a four game losing streak and gaining momentum in the toughest part of the BIG EAST Conference Schedule.

Up next for the ladies is going to be a conference tilt against Xavier University in Queens, NY on February 2 with the start of that game scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
