The Yankees organization as a whole is known for Winning. That tradition is something that continues into the developmental system.
Starting with the franchises Triple A team the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders, as they have won One Class Title, Two League Titles, 13 Division Titles and three Wild Card Births. Then there is the Team’s High-A Affiliate the Hudson Valley Renegades winning three league titles, eight division titles, one first-half title and one second-half title.
Then there is the team’s Double-A affiliate the Somerset Patriots as they have won seven league titles, 16 division titles two first-half titles and one second-half title.
This week, the Somerset Patriots look to continue the winning brand that the Yankees have built for the developmental system by taking on the Erie Seawolves in Pennsylvania for the Eastern League Championships.
The Patriots were inducted as the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate in 2020 and have since clinched the Northeast division title for the fourth time. Going 43-25 this season, they had the best record in the Eastern League, facing the Seawolves with a 39-29 line.
Somerset lost the first game of the series on Sunday night, after a 4-run 8th inning that cost them the game. Their offense was not quiet though, as they hit 3 home runs, and 19 total bases compared to the Seawolves’ 18. With a rest day on Monday, it’ll be up to the rested bullpen to hold their own for the next two nights at home in Somerset.
Patriots Manager Raul Dominguez is expected to give the ball to righties Cam Schlittler and Trystan Vrieling as they are going to take the mound for the next two games, both of whom have been solid contributors to the Patriots rotation this season.
Some of the players to watch for include catcher Rafael Flores was recently named the Yankees Minor League Player of the Year after putting up a .274 batting average alongside a nearly perfect performance behind the plate. He finished second in Yankees minor leagues in home runs, doubles, extra base hits, and total bases.
Expected to contribute to the series is Yankees Top Prospect Spencer Jones. Jones the First Round Draft Pick by the Yankees in 2022 has an average this season of .482, to go along with 125 hits, and 17 homers.
Fellow outfielder Elijah Dunham is an exciting prospect and is expected to be in the Bronx in the near future. Thus far during the course of the 2024 season he had a .357 average, 87 hits, 15 HR and an amazing .777 OBP.
The Patriots’ season has been historic, boasting a +86-run differential and a clear favorite in the Eastern League Championship series. The team continues to dominate the Double-A league, developing future New Yorkers at the highest level.
