Since the Yankees clinched their postseason berth on Wednesday, heads of the fans of the sports world in New York are now turning to Queens to watch the Mets as they compete for an NL Wild Card spot. Now tied for the second WC, there are a few keys updates for fans to watch as the regular season comes to a close.
Francisco Lindor remains a variable in the next few weeks. The veteran shortstop exited the game last Friday after experiencing back tightness but has resumed baseball activities since. He’s out of the lineup for Thursday but had a clean MRI and will likely return this weekend or early next week as the Mets face the Phillies again.
The Mets’ pitching rotation has been a core strength of the team this season, with highlights such as David Peterson’s 2.85 ERA, and Jose Quintana allowing 1 earned run in his past 5 games. Tylor Megill, Luis Severino, and Sean Manaea round out the five-man rotation.
Thus far the starters are keeping many opposing lineups a tough time and that is going to be the hopeful trend going into a 7-game postseason matchup. In an interview with Anthony DiComo for MLB.com, Quintana shared, “I’m really proud of this group.” As he should be.
Little Acuña is back! The Mets called up Luisangel Acuña last weekend as Lindor took some time off for his back. In his 15 at-bats since, he’s slashed .467/.467/.933 for an impressive stat line. He contributed to the Mets sweep of the Nationals, hitting two home runs and four RBIs across the series. As Lindor returns to the lineup soon, it’ll be interesting to see how the Mets manage these two at SS.
The Mets will take on the Phillies, Braves, and Brewers for their final few weeks of the regular season. The Phillies and Brewers lead their divisions respectively, so it’ll be up to the Mets to hold their own in those series. The Braves trail them in the Wild Card race by 1.5 games, so those games will be crucial if they want to clinch their playoff berth alongside their Bronx counterparts.
