If you ever wanted to introduce someone to how women’s soccer and how great defense can be in the sport be sure to have them do a search on the Concacaf W Champions Cup match between Gotham and CF Monterrey Rayadas that was played on Thursday night at Red Bull Arena.
With the result of 0-0 the tip of the cap goes to the defensive play of both franchises in an exciting battle between NWSL and Liga MX Femenil.
Soccer fans are encouraged to give a listen to this audio interview with Monterrey Manager Amelia Valverde:
Gotham looked great in the match as they did just about everything they could to win the match, including leading in possession 58%, shots 12-6 and total passes 428-293.
Probably the best chance for New York/New Jersey came from the foot of Crystal Dunn, as for Rayadas well they showed a quality brand of soccer and had themselves a chance around the 60th minute that was denied by Ann-Katrin Berger.
One could tell that Berger was going to have herself a match to remember as during the team’s warm-up session the goalkeeper was making saves that if were made during regulation could have made the top 10 highlight reel.
Ann-Katrin continued that trend during the match as she made several stellar plays during the course of the match.
At the end of the night though it was a 0-0 draw and a jersey exchange and a show of respect by both sides as the competition was fierce but respectful.
When it comes time for the Concacaf W Champions Cup Gotham FC is faring well in the competition as they are tied for second with Rayadas as they both have four points each. The next step for Gotham is going to be a first as the ladies are going to travel to Jamaica to take on Frazsiers.
As for the squad and the quest to repeat for the NWSL Championship, the regular season resumes on Sunday, September 22 against the Utah Royals for a match to be played at Red Bull Arena for Noche De Futbol day at 1:00 p.m.
