Penalty Winner in Leagues Cup sends NYCFC to Cincinnati with momentum

In what was an action-packed day at Yankee Stadium the 2024 Leagues Cup started for NYCFC with a bang, as the guys were able to earn a 4-3 penalty shootout victory against Querétaro FC at Yankee Stadium.

Bringing in some new faces to the starting rotation and seeing guys like Luis Barraza and Christian McFarlane paying dividends for the Boys in Blue is something for Head Coach Nick Cushing to be proud of.

Coach Cushing always optimistic and fighting for every one of his guys that are on the field and on the bench has always a tough decision to make when it comes time for the starters as every single person wearing the uniform can bring something unique and different to the team.

On Sunday it was the heroics of goalkeeper Barraza helping NYCFC deny Querétaro during the penalty shootout frame that got the Boys in Blue the huge victory.

Some of the other milestones compliments of the NYCFC Public Relations Department are:

The fact that the Boys in Blue saw four making their Leagues Cup debuts including Defenders Birk Risa and McFarlane along with Forwards Julián Fernández, Agustín Ojeda, Alonso Martínez and Jovan Mijatović.

The League Cup so far is something that both MLS and the Liga MX teams are benefiting from, as teams are able to see new competition and breath a different perspective into both seasons.

For Coach Cushing he welcomed the opportunity to see what his team could do against the quality opponents from the Liga MX and continue the play against the quality MLS opponents.
