Going up against the Portland Thorns is a tough assignment for any NWSL teams and the Washington Spirit gave things the best shot that they could but ultimately fell by a final of 2-1 on Saturday.
Putting in an impressive performance for the Spirit in the net is Aubrey Kingsbury as she tallied her 400th regular season save as she now ranks with Jane Campbell (HOU) as the only two players to reach this mark with a single club.
Scoring goals for Portland is Sam Coffey and Christine Sinclair as Portland went into the locker-room with the early lead.
The Spirit were able to get some impressive numbers at the Half as they led in possession by 57%, shots eight to seven.
Thanks to the continued effort by the ladies, they were rewarded for the work that they put in as Lena Silano found the back of the net from an assist by Trinity Rodman.
The goal for Silano is the first in the regular season and it also was able to extend Trin’s club record to 14 career regular season assists.
Even though the ladies saw a road loss, there were some final stats that they could point to as positives including being able to outshoot the Thorns 11-3, possessing the ball 67% and are looking to rebound in the next road match.
The ladies they are going to next head to Kentucky to conclude a three-game road stand against Racing Louisville on Friday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m.
