New York City FC II Win Penalty Thriller at Belson Stadium

Thus far New York City FC II are looking great as the MLS NEXT Pro Season is underway. In the squad’s very first match against Inter Miami II the result was a tough 3-2 decision, before starting the U.S. Open Cup against FC Motown with a 3-0 victory.

In the team’s most recent showing against Chattanooga FC, it was the Boys in Blue coming away with a penalty thriller after a tightly contested and physical battle.

It was Chattanooga FC starting the night strong on a goal by Taylor Gray in the 8th minute of play. As the match went along though NYCFC II showed a strong defensive effort while finding there rhythm offensively.

As the teams entered into the lockeroom with NYCFC II down by a goal there were some promising stats as the guys led in shots by a margin of 4-3 while blocking two shots.

When the whistle blew to start the Second Half, it was all NYCFC II finding their stride and momentum as in the 55′ Jonathan Shore put in a rebounded chance to tie up the score.

For Shore the goal was the second in the MLS NEXT Pro Regular Season, as he is currently tied for third-most goals scored this season.

After that it was all the Boys in Blue as stellar opportunities by both Máximo Carrizo and Taylor Calheira almost got the team ahead.

In the cage for NYCFC II Alex Rando did himself an outstanding job in stopping the Chattanooga offensive attempts in the second half and was a huge part in the NYCFC II squad going into the shootout frame.

As the teams lined up for the shootouts the first attempt by NYCFC II and Piero Elias found the back of the cage, then it was in the Third, Fourth and Fifth Rounds that the guys were able to cash in on goal scoring opportunities.

Shining in the shootout were Máximo Carrizo, Chris Tiao and Ronald Arevalo as they helped the franchise to their sixth-ever shootout victory.

For Tiao there was a bit of a milestone moment as he along with Calheira made their debut in front of the Belson Stadium crowd.

Thus far NYCFC II record when they open at Belson Stadium stands at 1W-0L-2D as the team as a whole scored five goals. In the history of NYCFC II this is the second Home Opener that went to the PK frame while also thrilling the fans of Queens, New York.

New York City FC II is going to next be in action for the MLS NEXT Pro Hudson River Derby as they take on the New York Red Bulls II in the Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match between NYCFC II and the New York Red Bulls II is set to take place on April 2 with the action scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
