For those that love and have a passion for Basketball one of the names that those that are older school basketball fans are going to hopefully remember is the American Basketball Association.
The history of the ABA originates from 1967 to 1977, names such as Julius “Dr J” Erving, Connie Hawkins, David Thompson and Roger Brown all dazzled fans.
The great news for both fans of basketball and those that love sports in the New York City area is the fact that the ABA is reborn, and they have a team in Coney Island in the Coney Island Thunder.
One of the cool things for those that are basketball fans in the Coney Island. For those that have seen the documentary “A Kid from Coney Island,” it did a great job of chronicling the life of Stephon Marbury and how the area shaped him as an NBA star.
Fans are encouraged to take a look at the photo gallery from the game versus the Wyoming Valley Clutch:
The excitement of both the ABA and Coney Island basketball are back in the Thunder, and thus far the team is doing great as they have gotten there brand onto merchandise, are selling tickets and have the full support of the fans.
Coney Island Thunder fans are also encouraged to view the following video as we captured the team celebrating Coach Maurice “Mo” Brown and we got to chat with Thunder star Terrell Fullerton:
Not only that but the team is in the Top 25 Power Rankings while also making an impact in the community as they held a Gift of Giving event in the Cans and Coats Donation Drive during the month of December.
What is even more exciting for fans of the team is the fact that they are getting to see the next generation of leaders and basketball stars on the journey to superstardom.
With a roster of players from Colleges such as York, Lehman, LIU Post and more seeing the team in person one can see the type of chemistry and excitement they are bringing to the floor.
Recently the team took on the Wyoming Valley Clutch by the score of 110-105. The team holds a 12-3 record and are led by Coach Brown as he is a leader both on and off the court.
Coach Brown a graduate of St. John’s University is bringing his style of teaching to the ABA and the results are showing as what is seen on the floor is an exciting and well played brand of basketball.
Thus far the ABA season is in full swing but there are still plenty of chances to catch the Coney Island Thunder playing in person. Playing on the campus of Kingsborough Community College the team plays against teams from Philly, Connecticut, and also having home games in the Coney Island area.
The guys are going to be hosting the Bennington Martens on January 21 at Kingsborough Community College with the action scheduled at 5:00 p.m.
