Gotham FC Playoff Bound on Wild Decision Day in NWSL

The year 2023 is one that shows the growth of the sport of women’s soccer. Starting with the fact that every team completed in the most recent 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to the first ever historic NWSL Decision Day that was held on October 15, the sport is growing more and more on a daily basis.

One of the best parts for women’s soccer fans is the fact that the sport of women’s soccer is growing in a positive direction, with more and more people getting invested in the beautiful game.

Playing in front of an electric crowd at Red Bull Arena the ladies of Gotham FC entered the pitch on a day full of emotions. As the ladies navigated not only the uncertainty of the fate in the 2023 Playoffs, but also the potential idea of saying goodbye to a soccer great in Ali Krieger.

Feeling a ton of love and positive support, the ladies of Gotham FC got the action going in the best way possible with a goal in the sixth minute, as Midfielder Delanie Sheehan found forward Midge Purce inside the eighteen-yard box for the first goal of the match.

For Purce the goal is her 25th NWSL regular-season goal in her career, in addition to being her 16th. Purce is tied with second-most in club history with former Gotham FC midfielder and U.S. Soccer legend Carli Lloyd.

Then with all the momentum on their side the ladies increased the lead in the 15th minute on a goal by Yazmeen Ryan.

Kansas City though showed a ton of spark and heart, and thanks to that was able to cut into the Gotham FC lead in the 26th minute. It was Alexa Spaanstra that was able to find the back of the net on a beauty of a shot from the top corner.

Then in one of the more memorable moments thus far in the 2023 season there was a huge defensive play by Krieger, as she stepped in by sliding into the goal and preventing a great attempt by the Current.
The ladies of Gotham FC though got some bad news when an own goal tied things up just before half.

With the teams heading into half all tied at 2, it was going to be interesting to see what would happen after the halftime. When the second half began the momentum was fully on the side of Gotham FC as they created some great chances to get themselves the win.

Gotham FC put all their heart and effort into trying to gain the win, as they outshot the visiting side by a tally of 11-2, sadly though at the end of it all the score remained 2-2 and that is when the waiting game started.

As everyone at Red Bull Arena anxiously awaited to see what would happen in the 2023 NWSL Playoffs, it turns out the results were in favor of Gotham FC as the ladies were able to get themselves one of the coveted playoff spots.

It is going to be a tough test though as Gotham FC heads on down to take on the North Carolina Courage in the quarterfinals of the 2023 NWSL Playoffs on Sunday, Oct. 22 (7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports).
