As the East Coast braced themselves due to the massive flooding taking place, thankfully the action within Mohegan Sun Area was able to get underway and a wonderful atmosphere for one of the most important games of the series. Showing team play it was the Liberty coming out on top by a score of 92-81 .
New York were able to set a WNBA record, as they were able to score 37 points in the 1st Quarter, in addition the defense did a great job in holding the Sun at a 22-point lead. 2023 Kia WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart got her team started scoring 12 of the 37 points. With the focus on Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, Betnijah Laney might be the liberty’s secret weapon. Laney has so many moments for the Liberty thus far where she has helped to spark both the offense and defense and that trend continued in Game Three. Betnijah once again impressed with her 20 points, adding 8 rebounds, and four assists.
Also stepping up for the New York Liberty is Jonquel Jones as she is regaining her MVP form, especially since the All-Star Game. On the day where she received news of being inducted into her College George Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame, JJ filled up the stat sheet and earned her 15th double-double of her postseason career. Courtney Vandersloot added 12 points and a team-high seven assists.
“ Stewie was at her best tonight and that got us off to a really great start. She’s the MVP, The MVP isn’t going to miss too many shots and when she gets locked in but even when she’s missing in the last game. It’s not all about scoring for Stewie, it’s how she impacts the game and the confidence she gives. Leadership, defense, the rebounding, all of it,” said Coach Sandy Brondello after the game.
There were a ton of emotions that were shown by the Connecticut Sun, as the team hoped to rebound in front of a wonderful crowd at the Mohegan Sun Arena. During the team’s time out’s Sun Head Coach Stephanie White gave several motivating and inspirational speeches to get the team fired up for the game.
The Sun did well, it was just the Liberty playing together and a as a team that eventually gained the victory.
Helping to lead the way in scoring for the Sun is Alyssa Thomas finished with a team-high 23 points, a game-high 14 assists, and nine rebounds, while Tiffany Hayes added 16 points, six rebounds, and two assists.
The next moment for both the Liberty and the Sun is going to be the biggest as it is going to be Game Four. If the New York Liberty are able to earn the victory the ladies are able to go dancing in the 2023 WNBA Finals for the first time since 2002. If the Connecticut Sun win, they get to live to see another day and thus moving the series to a crucial Game 5 at the Barclays Center on October 3.
