New York Liberty Soak Up the Sun in 89-58 victory against Connecticut 

Featuring a day of cultural celebration at the Barclays Center, the New York Liberty hosted West Indian Night at Fridays nights game against the Connecticut Sun. At the end of the game it was New York with a 89-58 victory, and now a 4-0 mark against the Sun in the 2023 Season.

The Good News for New York is that they get to hold on to their spot as the number two team in the league and playoff seed.

Jonquel Jones, born in the Bahamas expressed her excitement for bringing the West Indian culture to game night. Halftime performance by Jamaican Artist Serani and Nailah Blackman from Trinidad & Tobago was a delight to see coming from the Island of Jamaica myself. Jones is one of the leaders for the Liberty in scoring as she totaled 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.

“It’s the first time I have been able to do something like this, to experience something like this It shows the diversity of New York City to do something like this and to get behind this. It means a lot to me, “said Jonquel Jones 

A right calf sprain for Sabrina Ionescu, and due to that injury was out Friday night decision made by Coach Sandy Brondello.  With Sabrina out, Marine Johannès got her fourth start in the season.

Johannès impressed by shooting at 55.5 % 5-9 shooting finishing with an overall total of 18 points along with three rebounds. The French player has some of the most impressive passes the league has seen is also one of the best players to come off the bench this season. When Johannès gets the ball, she going to shoot it and nine out of ten she’s going to land those shots. 

“Our bench is really important that’s going to be the difference comes playoff time,” said Breanna Stewart.

Betnijah Laney is making her claim to for the most DPOTY in the WNBA with another great performance in Friday night’s game against. In the first quarter Laney had 10 points helping the Liberty lead in the first quarter that set the tone for the rest of the game. Laney ended the game with 19 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. 

“We’re putting her in good spots to be aggressive, and then her just making great plays. That makes us harder to guard when we’ve got attacks from so many different spots on the floor, and you know, she’s great, she’s a competitor, and she keeps getting better and better,” said Coach Brondello (on Laney). 

The Sun could not keep up with Liberty’s defense after being swept by the Aces the night before. Sun star Tiffany Hayes finished with 11 points, two rebounds, and two assists, while Olivia Nelson-Ododa totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists off the bench.

The New York Liberty just wrapped up their game against the Chicago Sky with the recap of that game upcoming, and up next for the Ladies they head to Dallas to continue their road trip against the Wings on September 5.
