As the New York Mets (50-58) currently sit in fourth place in the National League East standings, and the trade deadline having now wrapped up, fans of the team are going to see a new look to the 2023 roster.
It is going to be fascinating to see how the moves that current General Manager Billy Eppler made when people look at the team in a few years from today.
When Eppler made the move to trade the likes of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander for prospects, if these prospects turn out to be the next big stars in baseball, then these trades are going to be ones that are going to make Billy look smart.
That is going to be the hope at least.
One of the moves that has a ton of baseball fans intrigued is the Scherzer deal, as the Mets traded Max to the Texas Rangers for infielder Luisangel Acuña.
With this deal Acuña is now the Mets current top prospect, overall, the infielder is the 44th best prospect in the majors overall according to MLB Pipeline.
Here are some of the stats that Luisangel brings to the teams Double-A Binghamton team, thus far he has a slash line of .315/.377/.453 with 25 doubles, two triples, 51 RBI, 68 runs scored and 42 stolen bases.
Coming from a great baseball background Luisangel is the son of former Mets farmhand Ronald Acuña Sr. and is the brother of current Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr.
Thus far Luisangel is adjusting to being in Binghamton quite nicely, as he recorded his first hit with the Rumble Ponies on August 2.
Then after that deal the Mets traded OF Mark Canha to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Justin Jarvis.
Jarvis is going to be an arm to watch for, as he is ranked the 12th best prospect in Baseball America’s midseason prospect rankings.
The trades kept on coming on August 1, when the franchise made the deal to send Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros for prospects Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford.
This is one that may have surprised those that followed the team, as there were a ton of people that were pulling for Justin to do well while he was in the Mets Uniform.
What is going to be interesting is to see how the two prospects the Mets got in return do as Gilbert is the top prospect in the Astros Organization, while Clifford is the team’s third prospect.
The Mets Minor League System kept getting stocked up when the franchise made the deal of right-handed pitcher Dominic Leone for infielder Jeremiah Jackson. Shortly after the Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers made a trade as Phil Bickford and Adam Kolarek are both going to be the newest members of the roster.
The final deal that was made was when the Mets sent Tommy Pham to the Arizona Diamondbacks for infielder Jeremy Rodríguez.
In addition to all the excitement that the team had on the trading deadline, there were also some exciting events and clubs added so that fans of all ages can catch the excitement that is happening at Citi Field.
Around July 29 the Mets announced their first-ever Teen Club that offers members ages 13-15 an opportunity to enter for chances to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences at Citi Field.
Also, in the events to check out at Citi Field, it was announced on August 3 that the second annual NYPD vs FDNY charity baseball game, the Battle of the Badges is going to be held on August 10 at 7:10 p.m.
Fans are going to be in for a treat as each team is going to consist of former high school, college and minor league baseball players that are now members of the FDNY and the NYPD.
Another treat is the fact that former Mets Captain and Seven-Time All-Star David Wright is going to host the tame and award an NYPD and FDNY hero for doing ‘The Wri5ht Thing” prior to the game.
The Mets are currently on the road after facing three tough losses to the Kansas City Royals is set to take on another American League team in the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series starting on Friday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
On the mound for Game One for New York is going to be lefty David Peterson as he has a 3-7 record with a 5.92 ERA and 68 strikeouts. Peterson goes up against Orioles righty Dean Kremer, as he has a 10-4 record with a 4.66 ERA and 111 Strikeout stat line.
Game One between the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. with the action set to air on the SNY Network.
