As the UKG Challenge Cup continued play two of the NWSL finest East Coast teams were in action as Gotham FC took on the Washington Spirit.
Things started off on a strong note for Gotham FC, it was the Washington Spirit that laid down a challenge to be one of the teams to watch for during the rest of the NWSL season by mounting a comeback and getting the 4-2 victory.
Opening up the night it was all Gotham FC as Midge Purce scored the first goal of the game. Then things looked even better when Jenna Nighswonger doubled things up with a goal in the 8′.

With a slight delay of thunderstorms in the Washington D.C. area, it was eventually on that the Spirit found their momentum and confidence thanks to the opening salvo goal by Ashley Hatch in the 26′.
Eventually the ball kept rolling in favor of the Spirit as goals by Camryn Biegalski (55′), Hatch (63′) and Chloe Ricketts (70′) all lead to a huge three points.

Thus far the Challenge Cup rankings have the North Carolina Courage leading the way in first place with Gotham FC and Spirit ranking in second and third respectively.
Gotham FC looks to defeat the North Carolina Courage, as these two teams are in action in the next stage of the Challenge Cup on August 5, at Red Bull Arena with the start of the match happening at 7:30 p.m.
As for the Washington Spirit the ladies have a Challenge Cup match at Exploria Stadium against the Orlando Pride on August 4, with the start time scheduled for 7:00 pm.
