Rough night on the road as New York City FC falls to Philadelphia, 2-1

Playing in Subaru Park is a tough test for any Major League Soccer Club, and though the guys at New York City FC (5-8-11) fought, they ultimately fell to the Philadelphia Union (12-7-4) by a final of 2-1 in Major League Soccer action on Saturday.

The loss was especially tough for the Boys in Blue, as the guys were on an eight-match unbeaten streak (1W-0L-7D) but going up against a Union team that has a 7W-1L-2D record in Chester.

Some of the positive stats that came from this match for NYCFC included the fact that the guys had outshot the Union by a tally of 11-5, was able to outpass one of MLS’ best clubs with a total of 561-447.

The other two impressive stats included the fact that the Boys in Blue led in accuracy 88.8% and 82.5% and corner kicks 6 to 3.

It was ultimately Philadelphia and their ability to create offensive opportunity and scoring prowess that won the night. The first goal for the Union came at the 24′ from the foot of José Martínez, connecting on a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner.

With the momentum fully in favor of the Philly squad, the teams went into the locker at the half. After that the Union came out and once again cashed in on a scoring opportunity by Chris Donovan at the 81′.

NYCFC did cut into the lead and made the night close, when at the 86′ Andres Jasson blasted a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner.

From there though the Philly defense stood tall and walked away with the huge three points.

Up next for all of Major League Soccer is the upcoming 2023 League Cup Tournament, as the teams in America get to try their hand at beating teams from Liga MX. New York City FC is going to have themselves an interesting first match, as they take on the Atlas Fútbol Club on Sunday, July 23 at 7:00 p.m.

The first round of the 2023 League Cup is set to take place at Citi Field in Queens, New York.
