Thriller on the road for the Washington Spirit in 3-2 victory over Kansas City Current

When a team comes back from one goal that is always a huge accomplishment, but to be able to climb back from multiple goals makes the night even sweeter.

The Washington Spirit achieved that moment and for the first time, as the ladies completed their first-ever two-goal comeback in their 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Current on Sunday.

Kansas City had all the momentum up until the 23 minute, that was when the Spirit found their offensive rhythm and scored three unanswered goals for the victory.

With the win the Spirit are now at the top of the NWSL standings, as the 2023 season is at the midway mark.

Things were rough for the Spirit, thanks to the play by the Current and first-year forward Michelle Cooper, as at the 1′ the home team got the early lead. That goal is going to be etched in the NWSL record books as it is the NWSL history and the first of the rookie’s career.

Then Kansas City increased their lead on a penalty kick by Debinha in the 32′, with the odds stacked against them and with temperatures soaring, somehow or the other this Spirit team found their confidence and scoring touch as the match progressed.

The comeback started in the 36′, when Ashley Sanchez cut into the lead with a right-footed goal. The tally for Sanchez is her 10th career regular season one, and that ties her with Mallory Swanson for ninth all-time in club history. She is tied for third in the NWSL with seven shots on target from outside the box.

Washington Spirit fans are encouraged to check out the following Post Match Press Conference video featuring thoughts from Head Coach Mark Parsons along with Tara McKeown and Paige Metayer …video is compliments of the Washington Spirit:

After a bit of a breather at the Half the Spirit continued their offensive momentum and not only that but the team’s defense also stepped up as well.

One of the huge parts of the team’s defense is the play of McKeown, as she has made some huge tackles for the squad. Thus far McKeown has 11 and that ranks most amongst the team.

Then the Spirit tied things up on a goal by Metayer in the 82′, the goal was Metayer’s third of the season, and the third off a corner, which is the most in the NWSL.

Continuing to put the offensive pedal to the medal, the game-winner came off the boot of McKeown, as she displayed her goal scoring ability in the 87′, with a right footed cross to lift the squad to the huge three points. The goal for McKeown is her second in four days.

The match for the Spirit is a huge one, as they now lead the all-time series against Kansas City 3-2-0. this was also a first for the squad, in the fact that they were able to win at Children’s Mercy Park for the first time.

Up next for the Spirit the ladies are going to continue their road trip with a trip out west to take on the Portland Thorns on Friday, June 23 at 10 p.m.
