Tale of Two Halves as Gotham FC comes back to earn Draw against the Dash

Playing in extra humid temperatures and giving their fullest effort on the pitch, the ladies of Gotham FC stepped up their game and earned a 1-1 Draw against the Houston Dash in NWSL action on Sunday.
Playing in front of an incredible crowd at Shell Energy Stadium, it was a tale of two halves as it was the visiting side that was able to step up their game in the Second Half of play to earn the tie.

It was a battle for both clubs, as they were creating some great opportunities in the early going. When the hydration break came along, it was Gotham FC holding a 2-1 advantage in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós shares these thoughts after the team’s match on 6/11:

Then in the heart wrenching moment for fans of New Jersey/New York, captain Ali Kreiger fell to the pitch and went off the field with an injury. Coming on to help the team play the rest of the match is defender Ellie Jean, as she showed some quality soccer for the team.

It was the Dash that got on the scoreboard first, as forward Michelle Alozie sent a ball to midfielder María Sánchez finding the far side of the net in the 36th minute for the lead.

As Gotham FC went into the locker room at the half, it was clear that the ladies needed to get themselves fired up again, and they were able to do so. It was around the 53rd minute when defender Jenna Nighswonger, who was recently named NWSL Rookie of the Month connected with Lynn Williams for a shot that hit the post.

Gaining the rebound on the play was Kristie Mewis, and while she was attempting the shot got taken down pretty roughly setting up the penalty opportunity. Cashing in on that was Williams, with her first penalty that tied things up at 1-1.

With the fans at Shell Energy Stadium rocking, it had seemed as if the Dash gained the lead in the 61 minute, but that was overturned after a VAR review of the goal.

After much stellar play by both squads, they wound up the match with a point each. Which is the first of two consecutive road matches for the ladies. Gotham FC currently sits in Fifth Place in the NWSL standings, as they continue their road stretch on Sunday, June 18 against Racing Louisville.
