It was a tale of two halves for the New York Liberty (2-1) as the team rallied in the second half of play to get the 81-65 victory over the Connecticut Sun (3-1). This was the Liberty’s second victory of the WNBA season as the team continues to gel and get chemistry with the other.
Playing in front of an epic crowd at the Barclays Center, as they were also on hand for the AAPI Heritage Game, the ladies showed why they are going to be a team that fans are going to want to come back and see in action.
The team overall finished on a 47.1% (32-68) shooting from the field night, to go along with a 40.9% (9-22) from three, in addition the ladies shot well from the charity stripe going 61.5%.
Fans of the New York Liberty are encouraged to check out the following Post Game Press Conference video. Included are thoughts from Head Coach Sandy Brondello along with Courtney Vandersloot and Breanna Stewart. Video is compliments of the New York Liberty:
Connecticut got on the scoreboard early, and went on a 10-2 run from the 6:03 mark of the first to the 4:21 mark.
New York then regained momentum and found their offensive rhythm, as when the action concluded they say three players finish with double-figure scorers in Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot and Sabrina Ionescu.
Stewart had herself a night, as she finished the game with a game-high 21 points on 43.8% (7-16) shooting from the field. That includes a 50% mark (3-6) from three to go along with six steals, five assists and a game-high four blocks.
Another highlight performance came from Vandersloot, as she had her first double-double in her career in New York. Vandersloot finished the game with 18 points on 70% (7-10) shooting from the floor, that included 66.7% (2-3) shooting from three. In addition, Vandersloot showed off her amazing court vision by having a game-high 10 assist, while also grabbing three rebounds.
When it comes time to shooting from beyond the arc, Ionescu continues to show she ranks amongst one of the best, as she had a tremendous performance for the team. Ionescu wound up with 17 points, going 44.4% from three to go along with seven rebounds and three assist.
In the game vs the Sun, Sabrina knocked down her 150th career three-pointer, that milestone was reached around the 7:33 mark of the first quarter.
The other milestone moment for the team came thanks to Stefanie Dolson, as she tallied her 500-career assist at the 1:19 mark of the first quarter. There was also a special moment that happened for the team at the 8:55 mark when the team’s 2022 No. 5 overall selection Nyara Sabally scored the first basket of her WNBA career.
Up next for the New York Liberty is going to be an emotional game, as Stewart gets to return to Seattle to take on the Storm on May 30.
Stewart played from the 2016-2022 season with the Storm, and while she was there made her name in the WNBA. In her time with the team the forward won two WNBA Championships, was named to the WNBA All-Star team three teams among her many future Basketball Hall of Fame Accomplishments.
