After some incredible Goalkeeping against Orlando on May 14, Gotham FC Abby Smith was voted to the NWSL Bud Light Player of the Week for Week 7. The honors was announced by Gotham FC and the NWSL.
Abby had an outstanding performance against the Orlando Pride at Red Bull Arena recently, as she was able to make six-saves. One came as time was ticking off the scoreboard, to help Gotham FC preserve the 0-0 draw against the Orlando Pride.
Some of the other memorable saves for Smith includes parrying a shot over the crossbar in the First Half, in addition to making a double save prior to halftime. In the second half, Smith continued to show her fine Goalkeeping skills by making a diving second-half stoppage-time save.
Not only was Smith named to the NWSL Bud Light Player of the Week Honors, but she also earned the Gotham FC Player of the Match award on Sunday Night.
Thus far Smith has been a consistent presence for Gotham FC, as she has appeared in six matches and has logged 540 minutes of playing time. Thus far Abby has been able to make 27 saves and holds a 84 percent save average.
Smith has been able to outperform her expected goals on target (xGOT) by 6.8 this season and prevented three more goals than any other goalkeeper in the NWSL in 2023.
Gotham FC has fared well in the NWSL Bud Light Player of the Week Honors, as they have been able to gain the award three times this season, this includes Smith in Week 7 and Lynn Williams in Weeks 1 and 4.
