Mets have Intriguing Home Stretch as Rotation set to see the return of Justin Verlander against the Tigers

In the latest homestand the New York Mets (16-13) was able to gain a victory in the three games played against the Washington Nationals, then after dealing with the weather was able to win the second game in the double header that had been played on May 1.

New York fell in the first game to the Nationals by the score of 5-0, as young gun Josiah Gray went six strong innings striking out nine batters and only giving up four hits.

Some of the bright spots for the Mets in that game are Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, Daniel Vogelbach, Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez who all had a hit each.

In the second game New York fell by the score of 4-1, as once again Nationals pitching had been the key to their success. On the mound lefty MacKenzie Gore pitched six innings while sitting down 10 Mets batters.

Leading the way on the offense was Starling Marte, Jeff McNeil, and Eduardo Escobar as they all got hits in the game.
The finale between these two National League East teams is a nail-biter as the Mets were able to win the finale by the final of 9-8.

Baty, since his call up from Syracuse, once again shined with the big league club as he slammed a homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. In addition, Lindor had himself a heck of a game, finishing 2-for-5 to go along with two doubles.

Then New York went up against one of their longtime rivals in the Atlanta Braves on Friday, losing the first game 4-0.
In that game the offense was led by Pete Alonso, Baty and Alvarez as they all did well at the plate.

After dealing with the rain that was in the Metropolitan area, the Mets and Braves were able to wait things out and played a double header on Monday.

Those two games had fans on the edge of their seats as the team lost the first by the score of 9-8 but won the second 5-3.

The biggest storyline from the second game is the fact that Alvarez recorded some huge hits to help lead the team to victory. Alvarez is going to be someone that is huge for the Mets as they go forward, as he and his bat along with his ability to call games behind the plates is going to be huge for the team as they go forward.

Up next for the team is going to be a huge series in Detroit and more great news, as the team is hoping to see the return of Justin Verlander to their starting rotation.

Verlander is going to return after coming off the IL, thus far the starter looked good in his rehab start in Double-A Binghamton on Friday. In that start he was able to strike out six over 4.2 scoreless innings.

It is going to be a bit of a homecoming for Verlander and Max Scherzer as both starters made their name in the Motor City.
Since he departed from the Tigers during the August 2017 season, Verlander pitched the following line 2.26 ERA, 825 strikeouts and 114 walks in over 652 innings. In addition, he has also pitched a no-hitter, won two World Series Rings, two AL Cy Young Awards amongst all of his other accomplishments.

As for Scherzer, he himself has fared very well since his departure from Detroit. In his time with the Washington Nationals, he was listed in six top-five finished in the NL Cy Young voting. That included back-to-back wins in the 2016-17 season. Max played a huge part in the Nationals winning the World Series in 2019 prior to heading to Los Angeles and eventually the Mets.

It is going to be fascinating to see how the Mets as a team fare on the road, especially after picking up a huge victory over Atlanta on Monday.
