In what was a highly competitive match between two great soccer teams, the Washington Spirit and the Chicago Red Stars ended their match on 4/29 with a 1-1 draw in NWSL action.
There were a ton of milestones in the match as the NWSL saw two teams play in their 1000th and 1001st NWSL regular season matches on Saturday. The 1,000 mark was reached when Racing Louisville and the OL Reign started their play and then the 1,001 mark was hit when the Spirit and Red Stars started their action.
The NWSL started in 2012 and have been able to put on some stellar action for fans of the sport of soccer as of late, and the league is only getting started when it comes time for reaching milestones and putting a great product on the field.
Then in individual milestones Washington Spirit defender Sam Staab now has a new record of 73 consecutive regular season starts with her appearance against the Red Stars.
Getting back to the game action, the Spirit were able to get their offense going on a great note as the ladies just missed on a beautiful combination from Ashley Hatch and Trinity Rodman. Rodman had herself some great touches in that frame, logging four quality ones in the opponent’s box that wound up with three crosses in the first minutes of action.
Then the goalkeepers took over the match as both Alyssa Naeher and Aubrey Kingsbury both shined for their respective teams.
It was in the 29th minute that the Spirit were able to get on the scoreboard, when Hatch made the penalty kick attempt in for the first goal of the match. that goal tied Ashley for the most goals (4) in the NWSL.
The Red Stars were able to strike back quickly though, as Bianca St-Georges found the back of the cage in the 33 mark to tie the night up.
From there the defense for both teams stood tall as both teams wound up the night with one point each.
In terms of other interesting stats the Spirit were able to record 22 shots to the Red Stars 10, while the ladies were able to log 45 touches inside the opponent’s box.
Thus far the Spirit are still unbeaten during the 2023 NWSL regular season play. this is the third consecutive draw between the Spirit and the Red Stars.
The ladies get a chance to regain their winning ways on Saturday May 6 at Audi Field, it will be another tough test though as they host Alex Morgan and the San Diego Wave.
