One of the early season puzzles so far for the New York Mets (3-3) is how to get the bats going against the Milwaukee Brewers (4-1). So far in two games the team hasn’t been able to plate in any runs.
There were some shining moments for New York as Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte and Jeff McNeil were all able to connect at the dish.
Meanwhile the Milwaukee offense is starting to show why they have been able to make the playoffs on a yearly basis as the combined power of Rowdy Tellez, Brian Anderson and Garrett Mitchell hit consecutive homers off Max Scherzer. The Brewers were able to get their second route in the three-game series in the 9-0 victory.
On the mound Wade Miley pitched well, going six innings and striking out three batters. It was a milestone moment day for Miley as he got his 100th career victory.
The Mets will have another chance to figure out the Brewers pitching staff on Wednesday afternoon as David Peterson takes on Corbin Burnes.
Peterson did well in his last start against the Marlins, limiting them to one run over 5-0 innings. It will be interesting to see how Peterson does against the Brewers on September 21 as the last time he faced them he allowed a run without yielding a hit.
As for the Brewers, Burnes is making his second start of the season. The righty always plays well at American Family Field as he has a 17-12 record with a 3.47 ERA in 66 games.
In addition, Burnes does well against the Mets as he holds a 2-1 record with a 3.04 ERA in five games.
One of the things that will get the guys on the team excited is the fact that they are one day away from playing in front of their home fans, as the team’s home opener will be on April 6 at 1:10 p.m. against the Miami Marlins.
There will be a ton of festivities planned for the day, as the annual Shea Floral Presentation will occur prior to the game.
The Annual Shea Floral Presentation is a tradition that dates back to the first Opening Day at Shea Stadium in 1964, will start approximately 30 minutes before first pitch.
For those baseball historians they will be familiar with the name Bill Shea, as he was huge in bringing the National League baseball to New York. Fans will have an opportunity to see members of the Shea Family at Citi Field on Thursday, as they along with Manager Buck Showalter will present the good luck floral arrangement.
In addition, fans will be treated to a special performance of the National Anthem as New Jersey vocalist Anna Negron will be on hand. Presenting the colors will be the New York Fire Department. Also to sing “God Bless America” will be NYPD police officer Makiah Brown.
There will also be a ceremony to honor former broadcaster Bob Murphy, as the team will unveil an honored mark in the left field rafters that recognizes his 42 seasons broadcasting the Mets. Murphy, who is in the Mets Hall of Fame, called games for the franchises from the start of the team in 1962 until his retirement in 2003.
In attendance to throw out the first pitch will be Murphy’s children Brian, Kasey and Kelly and they will have a chance to toss to Mets alumni Mookie Wilson, Tim Teufel and Turk Wendell.
Fans will also be in for a treat as the world-renowned Empire State Building will be lit blue and orange. The start of the lighting display will be on April 5 and continue to shine through the Mets Opener on the 6th.
