The United States Women’s National team started up the 2023 schedule in style thanks to a 4-0 victory over New Zealand in the first of two consecutive friendlies. Two goals from forward Mallory Swanson along with goals from Alex Morgan and Lynn Williams helped to propel the USWNT to their first victory of the year.
With 12,508 fans rocking the crowd, the USWNT and New Zealand made sure to have a style of soccer that both thrilled and entertained those in attendance.
Things were physical and fast paced between the two clubs, as the US Team controlled the tempo from the start of the match. The USA had a 74% of possession as the Americans had great patience with looking for great scoring opportunities.
There were a ton of tactical adjustments that were made by the US as they came out of the locker room at the half. It was just a matter of time before the ladies found the back of the net as Swanson sprinted into the box and was able to find a beauty of a pass from Trinity Rodman for a header from 12 yards out.
Alex Morgan doubled the US lead in the 60th minute thanks to an assist by Rose Lavelle. Morgan who was able to fire a ball from a low and tight angle for what turned out to be the 13th career goal as a mother.
It was after that the USWNT was able to gain momentum as Swanson was able to strike two minutes later. The fourth and final goal for the US game from Lynn Williams.
One of the most noted players on the stat sheet was Rodman, who has been known for her dynamic and energetic style of soccer thanks to her play with the Washington Spirit. Rodman was able to set up most of the beautiful plays on the field in addition to being on the scoresheet for two assists.
The USWNT team will travel back to Auckland, Tamaki Makaurau to face New Zealand at Eden Park, New Zealand’s National Stadium. The start of this match is set for 10:00 p.m. on January 20th on Peacock
