Joel Soriano Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

After helping the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team to three wins over Temple, Syracuse and Niagara, Red Storm senior Joel Soriano has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday.

It is the second straight week Soriano has earned recognition by the league office, as the 6-foot-11 center was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll last Monday.

Soriano averaged team-highs with 18.3 points, 15.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks to lead St. John’s to a perfect 3-0 week. He recorded double-doubles in each of the Red Storm’s three victories over Temple, Syracuse and Niagara.

The Yonkers native began the week with a 15-point, 12-rebound performance in a 78-72 victory over Temple at Barclays Center in the semifinal of the 2022 Empire Classic. He shot 7-for-10 from the field versus the Owls and blocked two shots. The next night, Soriano erupted for a then career-high 19 points and 14 boards in the championship contest against Syracuse. The Johnnies’ big man shot 7-for-9 at the charity stripe against the Orange and blocked a pair of shots.

On Saturday, Soriano set new career-highs with 21 points and 19 rebounds in a win over Niagara at Carnesecca Arena. His 19 rebounds were the most by a St. John’s player since Shawnelle Scott also pulled down 19 boards to go with 20 points against Seton Hall on Feb. 17, 1993. Soriano leads all Division I players with six double-doubles and 12.7 rebounds per game this season.

The Red Storm will complete its stretch of eight games in New York City on Tuesday when the Johnnies host LIU at 6:30 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena. A live national telecast can be seen on FS1.
