USA Tops Colombia, 88-81, in Men’s World Cup Qualifying

The United States captured its eighth win Monday night after defeating Colombia, 88-81. The Americans never trailed in the game, however Colombia cut the U.S. lead to seven (67-60) with just under eight minutes to play. With the help of Langston Galloway and David Stockton, who combined to score 17 of the team’s 21 points in the final seven-and-a-half minutes, the U.S. secured the victory.

The U.S. will enter the final window of World Cup Qualifying with an 8-2 record atop Group.

TEAM NOTES

Free Throws: The U.S. shot 93.3% (14-15 FT) from the free throw line, marking the highest free throw percentage by a U.S. qualifying team.

Revered Reserves: The U.S. outscored Colombia’s bench, 26-9. The U.S. reserves were led by Elijah Pemberton, who finished with 10 points.

Helping Hands: The U.S. assisted on 20 of its baskets compared to 14 for Colombia. USA entered tonight’s contest ranked second in the Americas with an average of 22 assists per game.

Shooting Stats: The U.S. shot 43.5% (30-69 FG) from the floor, 35.9% (14-39 3FG) from 3-point range and 93.3% (14-15 FT) from the line. Colombia shot 38.0% (27-71 FG) from the field, 23.8% (5-21 3FG) from three and 66.7% (22-33 FT) at the charity stripe.

PLAYER NOTES

Galloway’s Ways: After recording 23 points (8-20 FG, 3-9 3FG) in tonight’s game, Galloway has scored 119 points through four 2023 World Cup Qualifying windows, setting the record for career points by a USA player in Men’s World Cup Qualifying since FIBA instituted the current competition format in 2017. Galloway is also the first American to record 100 career points since the format change.

Stock’s UpDavid Stockton finished with a team-high-tying 23 points (7-11 FG, 3-6 3FG, 6-6 FT), the most he has scored through his six games in 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifying.

DaQuan Can Do It AllDaquan Jeffries did a little bit of everything for the U.S. in their win, finishing with eight points, nine rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block. He led the team in rebounding and assists.
