Hofstra Men’s Basketball beats Princeton, 83-77

The Hofstra Men’s Basketball team ended its 2022-23 season opener on a 10-1 run in the fourth quarter, with Jaquan Carlos providing the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:11 remaining, to come away with an 83-77 road win over Princeton from the Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton, New Jersey.

Reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year Aaron Estrada powered the Hofstra offense with 27 points on 12-19 (.632) shooting from the floor, while Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention pick Darlinstone Dubar collected a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points. Estrada also finished with a team-high four assists against the Tigers. Amar’e Marshall dropped 15 points in the win for Hofstra.

The Pride pulled out to a five-point lead four minutes into the opening half, before Princeton pulled to within one several times during the opening stages of the half. Princeton surged ahead with a 14-2 run lasting nearly three whole minutes before an Estrada jumper stopped the Tiger run. Hofstra kept close with Princeton inside the final 10 minutes of the first half, closing to within three points after a late Marshall trey. Hofstra ended the half trailing Princeton, 42-38.

The Tigers opened the second half on an 8-3 run to go up by nine. Princeton eventually upped its lead to 10 points with 10:48 to go, but Hofstra closed the gap with a 12-4 run midway through the half, putting the score at 67-54 with 6:32 left in regulation. Princeton scored seven of the next nine points in the span of a minute, putting the hosts ahead by seven with 4:25 to go. A pair of Marshall free throws and an Estrada lay-up keyed a 9-2 run inside the next two minutes, with Carlos hitting a clutch three-pointer at 2:26 and Estrada making a contested jumper forty seconds later to even the score. Carlos swished his second three-point basket of the night to give Hofstra the lead for good, as Estrada scored the final four points of the game to seal Hofstra’s win.

Princeton was led by 20-point scorers Tosan Evbuowan (22 pts.) and Keeshawn Kellman (21 pts.), and Caden Pierce pulled down a team-leading 10 rebounds for the Tigers.

Hofstra opens its home schedule this coming Friday, November 11, against Iona. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. -The Pride is now 5-3 all-time versus Princeton. Hofstra won last season’s meeting, an 81-77 contest in Hempstead.
-Hofstra won its first season-opener since November 9, 2018 against Mount St. Mary’s.
-Hofstra shot 54.5% from the floor, compared to Princeton’s 49.2%., and the Pride went 41.2% from three-point range to Princeton’s 25%.
-Princeton pulled down 35 rebounds to Hofstra’s 31.
