It has been a while since the Washington Spirit had themselves a victory, in fact it has been since May, but thankfully in front of an energized crowd at Audi Field the ladies were able to record a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Wave in NWSL action.
The visiting side was able to get the first chance in the third minute of the game, as Jaedyn Shaw had herself a golden opportunity that was denied by Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury. It only took a few minutes for Shaw to cash in on a second chance, as she was able to get one past Kingsbury for a 1-0 lead.
There would be an equalizer for the Spirit just four minutes later as Tara McKeown was able to finish off a beautiful pass from Ashley Sanchez. McKeown had herself another great chance in the 20th minute, but that went just wide of the post.
San Diego almost had themselves a sizzling opportunity in the 29th minute as Kelsey Turnbow had herself a shot that went to the left corner that was saved by Kingsbury. In the following minutes the Spirit were able to take the lead when Amber Brooks was able to find the back of the net. That was Brooks first regular season goal in over three years.

The Spirit continued to add on to their lead as Brooks had her second goal of the game, while earning her first career NWSL brace. Things had gone back and forth between the two squads in what was a thriller of a soccer match.
It was in extra time that the Spirit was able to get a penalty that was scored by Ashley Hatch, getting the back to the left corner. That goal was huge as that had kept the playoffs hopes alive for the Washington Spirit.
The ladies will next be in action on Saturday, September 17 as they take on NJ/NY Gotham FC. The action is set to start at 7:00 p.m. at Audi Field as the team looks to win back-to-back matches for the first time in five months.
