It May Be Preseason, But Who Cares? Giants Beat Patriots 23-21

It’s been 7 months since the Joe Judge era as the New York Giants coach came to an end, capped by the illogical (to put it delicately) decision to have a 3rd & 9 quarterback sneak inside their own 5 yard line in the second quarter. In that time the team has experienced a much needed turnover in management, with GM Joel Schoen and Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll being pried from the Buffalo Bills (and their 34-15 record the last three seasons) to take over GM & Head Coach respectively.

The new era officially began, albeit in preseason with a Giants 23-21 win over AFC rival New England Patriots in Foxboroughon a last second field goal by . In a year where Daniel Jones is clearly on the QB hot seat and continues to raise questions about whether he’s got a job after this year, he ended his short stint going 6-10 for 69 yards and a rushing first down.

A solid start, but for many the jury will be out until easily week 4 whether he can hold down the job, especially with backup Tyrod Taylor going 13-21 and the team’s only passing touchdown. There has been talk that Jones has lost the faith of his teammates, so as a QB who was inherited by Daboll and Schoen he will face an uphill battle to keep the job that was handed to him in 2019 on a silver platter. But in his 3 years with the Giants his team has been a woeful 14-35 with a 3rd worst in the league 17.9 average points per game and second worst in first downs during that three year stretch. It will be on Jones to show it was leadership and not him that was the issue, as Tyrod Taylor is a more than capable starter if he stays healthy and his two year 11 million dollar deal shows that he will take over that role full time should Jones struggle.

Despite everything, there is a strange feeling of hope for fans of Big Blue. With new leadership that’s shown success with Buffalo we’re a fan base that’s strangely hopeful for the future 8-9 is doable and at least hovering around a playoff spot for much of the season is for many of us a win. And with a win last night against the Pats, even if it’s preseason is the start of a possible bright future.
