St. John’s Men’s Basketball to Face Temple in Empire Classic Opener

The matchups for the 2022 Empire Classic at Barclays Center have been announced, as St. John’s and Temple will face off on the opening night of the tournament on Nov. 21 at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNews.

The winner of that game between St. John’s and Temple will square off with the victor of the night’s first semifinal game between Syracuse and Richmond on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

The Johnnies and the Owls will meet for the 54th time overall and the first since 2009.  Two of the top 10 winningest programs in the history of the college game, St. John’s (1,904 victories) and Temple (1,962 victories) played on a nearly annual basis from 1940 until 1980.  The Red Storm holds a 32-21 advantage all-time again tshet Owls. 

Tickets for the Empire Classic, which benefits the Wounded Warrior Project, are on sale now.

The Johnnies, who depart on Thursday for a nine-day foreign tour to the Dominican Republic, will open their season on Nov. 7 against Merrimack in Queens.
