In Battle for the East Washington Mystics Come out on top, 78-69

There is always an intensity whenever it comes time for when the Washington Mystics (17-11) take on the New York Liberty (9-17). In the team’s final meeting of the 2022 season, it was the Mystics who came out on top.

With a playoff type atmosphere at Capital One Arena, thanks to the team’s annual Camp Day. The Mystics made sure that their return to the venue that hosted them through playoffs and Championship events, had another memorable performance.

The Mystics now have a 9-5 record against the Liberty, a record that dates back to the 2018 WNBA Season. 

Helping to lead the way offensively was Elena Delle Donne, who had 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting. One of the other stars of the game was Ariel Atkins who had 16 points. Atkins has been on a bit of a roll as of late, as she has now been able to score in double figures in 26 of her last 28 appearances this season.

Forward Myisha Hines-Allen was able to score 13 points, while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Center Shakira Austin was able to grab five rebounds, and Guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough showed why she will be a candidate for the Sixth Woman of the Year Award by dishing out a season-high and team-best five assists.

As for the Liberty they were able to have three players who scored in double figures, as they showed heart and grit against a tough team like the Mystics.

Leading the way for New York was Natasha Howard, who had a team-high 17 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds, which marks her fifth double-double of the season.

Sabrina Ionescu followed with  15 points, eight rebounds and four assists; to round out all scorers was Marine Johannes who had 12 points.

Next up for the Liberty will be a game on July 23 at the Barclays Center against the Chicago Sky, with the action for that game set for 7:00 pm.

As for the  Washington Mystics the ladies will have a bit of a breather before heading down to Dallas to take on the Wings on July 28, with the game set for 8:00 p.m.
