The United States Women’s National Team will play an international friendly match against Nigeria at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, September 6, U.S. Soccer announced recently.
The match will be the USWNT’s first ever at Audi Field and the first in the nation’s capital not to take place at RFK Stadium. The team last played in DC in March 2017 when it hosted France. “We are honored that this match is coming to the nation’s capital,” said Washington Spirit Vice President of Communications Jonna Valente. “This is a major moment for this city and we are excited to work alongside our partners at U.S. Soccer to make this match memorable for fans here in DC and beyond.”
September’s friendly will come just four days before the Spirit’s nationally-broadcasted home match against San Diego Wave FC at Audi Field on Saturday, September 10. Fans can purchase tickets to that match here. During this year’s summer FIFA window, the Washington Spirit had a total of seven players called up to play for the USWNT: Kelley O’Hara, Trinity Rodman, Ashley Sanchez, Andi Sullivan, Emily Sonnett, Ashley Hatch and Aubrey Kingsbury.

Last week, the USWNT officially clinched a berth in the 2023 Women’s World Cup after defeating Jamaica in CONCACAF Women’s Championship group play. Next year’s month-long competition will begin on July 20, 2023 and feature 32 nations, concluding with the championship match at Stadium Australia in Sydney on August 20.

STADIUM SAFETY PROTOCOLS
U.S. Soccer will follow official local health guidelines for this event. Fans are encouraged not to bring in bags of any kind. All tickets will be mobile-only. There will be reserved seating only; general admission will not be allowed. All concession stands will be cashless to reduce points of contact. Ticket holders are subject to U.S. Soccer’s Ticketing Terms and Conditions and Fan Code of Conduct.
Additional Notes:
- The USA last played Nigeria on June 16, 2021, at Q2 Stadium in the first-ever match at the state-of-the-art new soccer-specific venue in Austin, Texas. The USA won 2-0 on goals from Christen Press and Lynn Williams in front of a capacity crowd.
- The USA is 6-0-0 all-time against Nigeria and the first five of those games came at world championship tournaments, four at the World Cup and one at the Olympics. Until teams met in the friendly match in Austin, every meeting had been in a World Cup or Olympic match, so these two games will mark just the second and third friendly games between the teams.
- The first-ever meeting was in group play at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a match in which the Super Falcons took a very early 1-0 lead before the Americans stormed back with seven unanswered goals.
- Once the U.S. Women play at Audi Field, it will mark the 18th soccer-specific stadium built for Major League Soccer in the USA at which the team has played. The only two soccer-specific stadiums in the United States at which the USWNT has not played are DRV PNK Stadium in Miami and the newly opened Geodis Park in Nashville.
