NYCFC finally get their first win for Interim Head Coach Nick Cushing with a 4-2 home win over last year’s Supporter’s Shield winner New England Revolution with the help of penalty kicks, a red card and impressive saves by goalkeeper Sean Johnson.
Scoring opened in the 10th minute after Talles Magno scored on a no doubt penalty kick to the right side of the net, firing up the crowd early. However it only took the Revs 8 minutes to counter as a New York defensive breakdown led to a one timer in the direction of Gustavo Bou and a quick tie on Bou’s 5th goal of the season.

New York had a chance to break the tie with a second penalty kick of the half, but goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović turned away the Maxi Moralez shot keeping things knotted at one. NYCFC picked up the advantage for the rest of the match after a 41st minute red card was issued to Rev Defender Andrew Ferrell, resulting in an unprecedented 3rd penalty kick for New York, this time scored by Golden Boot winner Taty Castellanos (his then 11th of the season) and not only a 2-1 advantage, but a much needed man advantage the rest of the match which seemed to ignite an offense that has struggled of late.

New England struggled to recover coming out of the break as NYCFC would apply a dump and chase style with the Revolution down a man. Gabriel Pereira opened the scoring in the second half after a second defensive breakdown by the Revs lead to a 49th minute 3-1 New York lead. That lead would stay until the 77th minute when Gustavo Bou would log his second of the match, closing the lead to 3-2, a score that would last until minute 82 as Taty scored goal 12 on a breakaway rebound for a final score of 4-2.

No rest for the weary as New York heads down to FC Dallas for a match against the 7th place team on Wednesday.
4 Notes:
1) The crowd was without it’s drum section. Due to sanctions by MLS for fan conduct during the US Open match at Red Bull arena NYCFC has to be without the drum section or Tifo for the remainder of July.
2) With his two goals Taty Castellanos sits at the top of MLS for the moment with 12 goals, two ahead of Austin FC’s Sebastian Druisi. While Castellanos continues to both draw attention from and express interest in playing in Europe, the 23 year old says neither will distract from his performance for the team.
3) This was the first time in MLS history that a team had three penalty kicks in a match, much less in the first half.
4) Wednesday they face an FC Dallas team that seems to have recovered from it’s brutal season last year where they landed in 11th place in the West and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2013 This season they’re sitting in 6th with a 7-5-6 record.
