The Philadelphia Union return to the friendly confines of Subaru Park Friday against D.C. United after a flat Midwest trip. The Union appeared tired and frustrated after their intense match against NYCFC a few days before, missing a few opportunities early. Federico Navarro sent one past Andre Blake from the center of the box in the 68th minute to score the only goal of the match for Chicago. Shortly afterward, Jose Martinez picked up his second yellow card of the night, picking up a red card and suspension for the next game against Columbus. Five total yellow cards total were issued to the Union in this sloppy affair.
The next game against the Columbus Crew on July 3 was a bit better, ending in a 0-0 draw. Blake saved a penalty kick from Pedro Santos in the 19th minute to preserve the clean sheet. The Crew had 16 shots (5 on goal) to the Union’s 4 (2 on goal) for the match. Columbus has not scored a single goal against the Union since a match in November 2020.
D.C. United comes into Friday’s match tied for last place in the Eastern Conference and having lost four of their past six games overall. They defeated Orlando on the road in a high scoring affair 5-3 on Monday, matching their scoring output in all their previous six road matches combined. D.C. United is 2-4-1 on the road for the season so far. Meanwhile, the Union are looking for their second straight win at home and currently sit in second place in the Eastern Conference, two points behind the New York Red Bulls. This match also marks the return of four players Paxten Aaronson, Jack McGlynn, Quinn Sullivan and Brandan Craig who were with the U-20 US National Team that just won the CONCACAF championship. The match will be broadcast nationally on ESPN with kickoff at 7:30pm and fireworks following the game.
