Fran Fraschilla and Jennifer Rizzotti have been named head coaches for USA Basketball’s respective entries into the 2022 FIBA 3×3 Men’s World Tour and 2022 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series.
A longtime ESPN basketball commentator and former college basketball coach, Fraschilla will make his USA Basketball coaching debut. He currently serves as an analyst on Big Monday broadcasts and as a studio analyst for ESPN college basketball programming. Fraschilla covers the NBA Draft, hosts the “World of Basketball” podcast and has called action for FIBA tournaments and the Nike Hoop Summit.
“It is an incredible thrill to serve USA Basketball and contribute to the growth of our 3×3 program,” Fraschilla said. “USA Basketball stands for excellence, patriotism and class, so being a part of this organization is an honor. I look forward to doing my part to help grow the sport here in the United States as its popularity expands around the world.”
Fraschilla’s career includes head coaching tenures at Manhattan College, St. John’s University and the University of New Mexico. He also served as an assistant with the University of Rhode Island, Ohio State University and Providence College.
Rizzotti, who will make her 3×3 coaching debut, has served USA Basketball in a variety of capacities, including as an assistant coach for the USA Basketball Women’s National Team that won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2018 FIBA World Cup.
“I’m excited to continue to serve USA Basketball while enjoying a new personal challenge in my first 3×3 coaching experience,” Rizzotti said. “The 3×3 game is undergoing tremendous growth and I’m looking forward to helping grow the game alongside talented athletes who will compete on the 3×3 FIBA Women’s Series.”
The president of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun since 2021, Rizzotti is the current chair of the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Selection Committee (five-on-five). She is a longtime basketball coach and mostly recently helmed George Washington University from 2016-21.
Fraschilla will be on-hand this week in Springfield, Massachusetts, to run trials for prospective World Tour players who accepted invitations from USA Basketball. Athletes, many of whom have recent experience in the NBA G League, will be evaluated over the course of several days. The full list of trials invitees is available here (PDF). Both the World Tour and Women’s World Series rosters will be announced following the USA Basketball Red Bull 3X Nationals, set for May 13-15 at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.
The FIBA 3×3 World Tour, which opens in May and culminates with the World Tour Final in December, features more than a dozen masters and several qualifying events across the globe. The FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series features up to 14 events worldwide as teams vie to qualify for the World Series Final in September.
Both the World Tour and Women’s Series are instrumental point-earning opportunities in the FIBA 3×3 federation ranking system. Participation and success will help qualify the U.S. for future national team events, including the World Cup and Olympic Games.
