Washington Mystics Optimistic for the Future with Two Bright Stars in 2022 WNBA Pick

Washington Mystics Head Coach General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault has always been a man with a plan and fans of the team hope that the 2022 Season will be one that will feature a WNBA Championship.

Prior to the start of the 2022 WNBA Draft the Mystics made a blockbuster deal with the Atlanta Dream for the third and 14th overall picks.

The Mystics who picked third for the third time in the franchise history and for the first time since taking Stacey Dales with the third selection of the 2022 WNBA Draft. Washington also picked Murriel Page, who will be inducted into the Mystics’ Hall of Fame this summer, was selected third overall during the 1998 season.

For the 2022 season the Mystics hope to add to the depth that they have by adding Ole Miss Center Shakira Austin, who is a two-time All-SEC First Teamer to the squad. Austin who was able to make an Ole Miss program into a relevant one.

Austin, who hails from Fredericksburg, VA will have a chance to play for her hometown team, brings a massive wingspan along with good lateral movement. Shakira can protect the paint as well as versatility as she can switch to becoming a perimeter player.

1495 Sports is proud to bring the following video coverage from the 2022 Washington Mystics Draft Party held at Caesars Sports Book at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.:

“I feel like I got lucky. To be able to be able to learn from vets and people who you just look up to as role players, it is just an amazing feeling,’ Austin had said about coming to the Washington Mystics. “I feel like this opportunity is going to bring the best out of me and I am ready to start a career in D.C., back home. It is just an honor.”

Later on, in the night the team selected guard Christyn Williams with the 14th overall pick. Williams who hails from the University of Connecticut, averaged 14.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 33 games played her senior season at UConn. The Little Rock, Arkansas, native was named the 2022 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award winner, awarded to the nation’s top shooting guard, and the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She was also named a First Team all-conference selection for the third straight year. Williams leaves UConn ranked 15th in school history in career points, totaling 1,850 career points.

“Christyn Williams is the kind of player that we were hoping that would be at the 14th pick when we made the trade,” stated Thibault. “She is an effective offensive player both on and off the ball. She can create her own shot and get good shots for her teammates. She can also defend all three perimeter positions. This is an exciting pick for us, and we look forward to seeing Christyn soon.”

There is a ton of excitement surrounding the 2022 Washington Mystics team and the addition of both Austin and Williams to the team. The regular season for the team starts on May 6 against the Indiana Fever.
