It was a thrilling match between New York City FC and Comunicaciones, as the boys in blue were in Guatemala on Tuesday to see who would advance to the Concacaf Champions League. While it was Comunicaciones who would earn the victory on the pitch, it was New York City FC who was able to advance thanks to goals that were scored in the aggregate.
What had helped New York City FC was the fact that they were goals that they were able to score in Connecticut prior to the match on Tuesday, in addition to an early freekick by Taty Castellanos who bent the ball to the corner side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Comunicaciones, who had the support of 9,000 of their fans were able to find their first goal thanks to Andres Lezcano prior to half-time. To start the second half Talles Magno headed a ball in beautifully to for the 2-1 lead, and it had seemed as if New York City FC were going to sail their way into the Semis.
The hosts would not go down without a fight and gave all supporters of New York City FC grey hairs with their goas by Nicolas Samayoa, Lynner Garcia and Jose Contreras in the 69’, 72’ and 88’ minute respectively.
The match between New York City FC and Comunicaciones, will go down as one of the better soccer matches played, especially considering that Comunicaciones had themselves plenty of opportunities to score and advance themselves into the Semis.
Ultimately it was the play of New York City FC and some huge saves by goalkeeper Sean Johnson that was able to get the boys in blue into the Semis.
New York City FC is in the process of having themselves a historical season, as the team is a few months removed from winning their first MLS Cup title. In addition, this is the first time that the team is in the semis of the Concacaf Champions League.
New York City FC will return to their regular season Major League Soccer schedule on March 19, as the guys will take on the Philadelphia Union at 1:00 p.m. at Yankee Stadium. As for the Concacaf Champions League, New York City FC will either take on the Seattle Sounders FC or Club eon in the Semis.
As of right now the Sounders hod a 3-0 lead on aggregate heading into the second leg of their quarterfinal tie on Thursday.
