Second Round of Fun as Action Packed Atlantic 10 Tournament Delights fans

With hundreds of children in attendance in Capital One Arena the conclusion of the second round of the Atlantic 10 Conference featured a night of close calls, sheer dominance and one upset.

After the Fordham Rams were able to punch their ticket to the Quarterfinal round with their 54-49 victory over George Mason. The #5-seeded Saint Louis dominated the #12-seeded La Salle in the other portion of the afternoon session by a final of 71-51.

Helping to lead the way for the Billikens was Francis Okoro who had a double-double of 17 points and 13 boards, while Gibson Jimerson had a game-best 19 points. La Salle had showed grit and spunk with hanging tight, but it was Saint Louis and their fine scoring performance that prevailed.

Leading the way for the Explorers in scoring was Jhamir Brickus and Khalil Brantley, who had 11 points each.

Then there was the upset of the night as the #10 University of Massachusetts defeated the #7-seeded George Washington, 99-88. Noah Fernandes had an impressive outing with a career-high 29 points. The Minutemen had five players in double figure scoring as TJ Weeks, Jr and CJ Kelley made a huge impact with their 15 points apiece.

With a stadium of majority George Washington fans, the Colonials could not find a response for the Minutemen and their well-balanced offense. For George Washington Ricky Lindo, Jr had himself an impressive night with his 11 points

In the game of the night the #6-seeded Richmond just edged out the #11 seeded Rhode Island by a final of 64-59. At first it had seemed as if another bracket would be busted as Rhode Island held the lead for most of the evening, ultimately Richmond was able to hod on and advanced to the next round.

Leading the way for the Spiders was Grant Golden who had 19 points, while Tyler Burton had 12 points and 11 boards.

Today (Friday) is the Quarterfinal Round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament and fill feature some scintillating action set for the day. The first game of the day features the #1 seeded Davidson taking on the #8-seeded Fordham University at Noon.

After that will feature #4-seeded St. Bonaventure going up against the #5 seeded Saint Louis at 2:30 p.m. Then it will be #2 seeded Dayton taking on the #10 seeded University of Massachusetts with the tip for that game held at 6:00 p.m. Finally the night will conclude with the #3-seeded VCU taking on the #6-seeded Richmond.
