Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Tournament starts with a Bang

Capital One Arena was a buzz as the First Round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship was held on Wednesday afternoon.

Opening up the Tournament was 12th seeded La Salle were able to defeat 13th-seeded Saint Joseph’s, by a final of 63-56. Leading the way for the Explorers was Jack Clark who had 20 points and 13 rebounds in what was an epic battle between two rival teams from the Philadelphia area.

For Clark, he now has his third double-double of the season. The Redshirt Junior has been playing well as of late, as he was able to have a career-performance against Duquesne.

Clifton Moore had himself an impressive showing for LaSalle, with his 19 points and four blocks. Moore was able to have a milestone moment during the game as with the four blocks, he was able to push past Lionel Simmons for the most blocks in a single season in La Salle history with 77.

Saint Joseph’s was able to hang tough and made the night a nailbiter for the fans of the Explorers, in the end though it was La Salle and their overall great team play that pushed them to the next round.

Leading the way for the Hawks was Charles Coleman, who had a career-best 18 points and 11 rebounds along with Ejike Obinna who had 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The night was a special one for the Explorers in many ways, as Head Coach Ashley Howard was able to pick up the first postseason win of his Head Coaching career. In the three matchups against Saint Joseph’s the Explorers have held the Hawks to just 63-191 from the field for a combined 33.0%.

Thanks to their effort La Sale will now move on to the Second Round of the Tournament, which will be held on Thursday, March 10 at Capital One Arena. The Explorers will take on the Saint Louis Billikens with the tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

In the second game of the tournament, it was the 11-seeded Rhode Island just edging out the 14th-seeded Duquesne 79-77, in what was a fast-paced thriller of a game. Leading the way for the Rams was Antwan Walker who had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Rams had five players in double figure scoring, two of the more impressive performances cam from Jeremy Sheppard who had 15 points and Ishmael Leggett who had 12 points. This was a first for the Rams, as the last time they had five players in double figures was on December 7.

For Duquesne, Primo Spears shows why he is going to be a player to watch for this season and beyond, impressing many with his 30-point performance. Also having a great scoring night was Kevin Easley Jr, who had a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds.

With their victory Rhode Island will take on the #6-seeded Richmond in a game that is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

The Second Round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship will be even more action packed, and feature the Fordham Rams, George Washington, the University of Massachusetts to only name a few teams that will be playing that day.

The first game of the night will feature the #8-seeded Fordham taking on the #9 seeded George Mason with the action set to start at Noon. Anyone wanting to catch the action can do so by checking out the USA Network.
