Darlinstone Dubar and Omar Silverio each scored 10 points but it was not Hofstra’s night as Elon snapped the Pride’s six-game winning streak with an 81-55 Colonial Athletic Association victory Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Hofstra slips to 19-10 on the season and 11-5 in the CAA with the loss. Elon moves to 9-21 overall and 6-11 in the league play as the Phoenix ended a four-game losing skid.
Aaron Estrada added nine points and six rebounds for the Pride. Jalen Ray and Abayomi Iyiola each had six points.
The teams traded baskets to open the first half before Elon ran off five unanswered points to take a 702 lead with 17:07 on the clock. The Pride answered with four straight points to make it a 7-6 game at the first media timeout with 15:54 to play. Iyiola had four of the Pride’s six points in the early going. The Pride took a brief lead on a Caleb Burgess bucket before the Phoenix scored the next seven to take a 14-8 lead with 12:09 remaining in the half on a jump hook from Andrew Junkin. Hofstra took the lead once again, 15-14 on a three-pointer from Silverio, but Elon scored five in a row to go up, 19-15, with 9:09 to play. The Pride would get within one, 23-22, on another Silverio three-pointer with 7:02 to go before Elon scored 20 of the final 29 points to take a 43-31 lead into halftime.
Both teams started slowly in the second half with nearly three minutes elapsing without scoring. Elon would get on the board first and scored the first 16 points to extend to a 56-31 lead. The Pride would score their first basket of the half at the 12-minute mark with Jarrod Simmons converting a three-point play. Elon would push the lead to 27, 63-36, with 10:13 to play on a layup from Darius Burford. Hofstra would not get closer than 22 points the rest of the way.
Burford led all scorers with 21 points and added eight rebounds. Hunter McIntosh scored 18 points, Junkin scored 16 and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, and Michael Graham chipped in with 12 points.
Hofstra returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts William & Mary at the Mack Sports Complex.
