Feeling the energy from the crowd at Carnesecca Arena on Friday, the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team bolted to a 91-57 victory over Butler in BIG EAST Conference play. With the victory the Red Storm was able to match its largest-ever margin of victory in 43 years of BIG EAST Conference play.
The St. John’s Men’s Basketball team was able to equal a BIG EAST high-water mark that was set on February 15, 1999, in a 104-70 victory against Providence. That was when the team had played at Alumni Hall, during that Hoops season the Red Storm Men’s Basketball team would head to the Elite Eight.
Currently the Red Storm hope to reach those same heights, but first they must continue to take on the always tough BIG EAST Conference.
St. John’s had an impressive overall shooting performance with their 61.4% mark (35-of-57 from the floor), this marks the first time since an 81-71 victory over West Virginia on December 29, 2021, that the team was able to shoot better than 60% from the field. The team was able to hit 11 three-pointers, went 10-for-11 from the line, and was able to record 23 assists on 35 made buckets.

Julian Champagnie was able to lead the way in scoring with 31 points, to go along with seven rebounds and seven steals. Aaron Wheeler had an impressive showing netting 16 points on 6-for8 shooting. Wheeler has now been able to reach double figures in 13 of the last 14 games and is averaging 13.8 points per outing in BIG EAST play.

Having a dynamic night on the floor was Posh Alexander who had his third double-double of the season. Alexander impressed with his shot selection and finished with 13 points and 10 assists. Joel Soriano was able to finish with eight points and Montez Mathis and Dylan Addae-Wusu were able to add six points apiece for the Red Storm.
Up next for the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team will be a Wednesday night tilt against Creighton in Queens. The tip is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game is set to air on the FS1 network.
