Red Storm Women’s Basketball  Drops Clash with Wildcats, 82-58

The St. John’s Women’s Basketball team fell to Villanova, 82-58, in a BIG EAST clash at Carnesecca Arena on Friday afternoon.

Kadaja Bailey led the Red Storm (7-15, 3-9 BIG EAST) in scoring with 18 points. Camree Clegg scored in double digits for the fifth time this season, as the Westland, Mich. native tallied 11 against the Wildcats (14-6, 8-3 BIG EAST).

The Johnnies got off to a slow start, allowing the Wildcats to post an early 12-0 run before calling a timeout with 5:27 on the clock. The Red Storm shot 25 percent from the floor during the period and went 1-for-5 from three while Villanova went 8-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-9 from three. Despite closing the gap down the stretch with a 9-2 run, St. John’s trailed 21-11 after the first quarter.

The offense came alive during the following period with the Red Storm shooting 75 percent from the field while going 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Bailey logged 11 of the Johnnies’ 20 points during the frame, including a 3-pointer as time expired, putting St. John’s behind by just nine at the half.

Coming out of the locker room trailing 40-31, the Johnnies were held to 45.5 percent from the floor and one triple during the frame. Despite keeping the Wildcat to shooting just 16.7 percent from three, Villanova was able to build on its lead with Lior Garzon a going 3-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe for nine points. Getting outscored 21-13 during the period, St. John’s trailed Villanova 61-44 with 10 minutes to play.

During the final frame, St. John’s went 5-for-13 from the floor, including a pair of threes. The Wildcats shot 50 percent in the period and 40 percent from three, adding 24 points. Leilani Correa added six points in the quarter for the Red Storm, but the deficit proved to be too much.

Maddy Siegrist led the Wildcats in scoring with 34 points, sinking 15 of her 22 shots from the floor including a pair of triples during the game. Villanova outscored the Red Storm in the paint 42-24 and logged 23 second-chance points.

Next up for the Johnnies will be a two-game road trip beginning with a rematch with Xavier at the Cintas Center on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
