If walls can talk Carnesecca Arena can talk about the history that it has seen during the creation of the Gym. Especially with being the host for the St. John’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball team.
Having seen National Tournament Games, along with seeing the legendary Lou Carnesecca in action there have been some amazing moments that have been seen withing the building.
On Thursday night one more bit of history was made as St. John’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella took over sole possession of first place on the program’s all-time wins list with the team’s 86-83 victory over Xavier.
Coach Tartamella now has 177 victories, which surpasses his former mentor Kim Barnes Arico in having the program record. Tartamella had learned a lot from Coach Barnes Arico’s staff, serving nine seasons as a member of the staff.
Working his way up the ranks Coach Tartamella started as a graduate assistant in 2002, before serving three seasons as an assistant coach and four seasons as the programs associate coach. Thanks to what he was able to learn from Coach Barnes Arico, Coach Tartamella has been able to forge his own legacy as the Head Coach of the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team to six postseasonsas the Red Storm Head Coach, including three NCAA Tournament appearances.
St. John’s even got to make history under Coach Tartamella as in 2016 they were able to win the programs first BIG EAST title since 1988.
The Women’s Basketball team had played well against Xavier, as the team had shot 50% from the floor and 12-for-25 from beyond the arc during the night. All five starters were able to score in double figures as Leilani Correa led the way with a game-high 20 points. Unique Drake followed with 15 points. Rayven Peeples finished the night with a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points. Kadaja Bailey and Danielle Patterson rounded out the scoring with 11 points each.
St. John’s has had a strong record against Xavier, as this will be the 12th-straight victory. The Red Storm now lead the all-time series with a record of 14-2.
Up next for the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team will be a game on Friday when the team takes on Villanova in BIG EAST Basketball action at Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
