The St. John’s Women’s Basketball team will host Xavier for a BIG EAST battle at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night.
Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Matt Ambrose and Drew Casey on the call.
The Johnnies (6-14, 2-8 BIG EAST) fell to Marquette, 70-65, at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday. As a team, the Red Storm shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 31.3 percent from beyond the arc. St. John’s outscored the Golden Eagles in the paint 38-10 and held a 10-4 edge in bench scoring against Marquette.
Leilani Correa led the Red Storm in scoring, as the junior posted 17 points and added five rebounds. Kadaja Bailey tallied 15 points while Unique Drake logged 12 during the loss. Rayven Peeples recorded 11 rebounds, her seventh time pulling down double-digit boards this season.
St. John’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella recorded his 176th career win during the Red Storm’s 80-52 victory over Georgetown earlier this year. The win tied the record set by Tartamella’s mentor, Kim Barnes Arico, for first place on the program’s all-time wins list. In his 10 years at the helm, Tartamella boasts a 176-129 record.
Tartamella spent nine seasons on Barnes Arico’s staff, starting as a graduate assistant in 2002 before serving three years as an assistant coach and four seasons as the program’s associate head coach. Tartamella has been to six postseasons as the Red Storm’s head coach, including a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2016, his Johnnies won the program’s first BIG EAST title since 1988.
As a team, the Red Storm ranks second in the conference, averaging 73.8 points per game. The Johnnies also rank third with a free-throw percentage of 77.5. Correa places second in the BIG EAST, scoring 18.7 points per outing. Bailey sits fifth in the league in the category with 15.2 points per game. Camree Clegg ranks 11th in the conference with 3.3 assists per game.
Xavier enters the contest with a 7-12 overall record and 2-8 mark in conference play. The Musketeers went 1-1 last week with a 70-67 overtime win at Georgetown and an 82-57 loss at Villanova. The team averages 64.8 points while shooting 40.3 percent on the year.
Individually, Nia Clark paces the Xavier squad with 12.3 points per game. Kae Satterfield averages double-digit points with 10.1 per outing and leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game. Shaila Beeler posts a squad-best 3.5 assists per appearance for the Musketeers.
St. John’s leads the all-time series with Xavier, 13-2. The Johnnies have won 11-straight against the Musketeers with the last loss coming in 2015. Due to COVID-19 cancelations, the teams did not meet during the 2020-21 season.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday when the team gets set for a BIG EAST battle with Villanova. Tip-off from Carnesecca Arena is slated for 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
