Hofstra Closes Non-Conference Slate With Road Trip To Monmouth

Coming off one of the greatest regular season wins in program history, the Hofstra Men’s Basketball team will finish the non-conference portion of its schedule when it faces Monmouth on Wednesday evening.

Tip-off from the OceanFirst Bank Center is slated for 7 p.m.

The game will air on ESPN3 and WRHU (88.7 FM) will have an audio only broadcast. Links to both broadcasts, as well as the live statistics, can be found on this page and on the men’s basketball schedule page at GoHofstra.com

It was an incredible Saturday night for Hofstra as the Pride captured one of the biggest wins in program history with an 89-81 victory over #24 Arkansas. Graduate student Jalen Ray and junior Aaron Estrada each posted 22 points in the win with Estrada nearly tallying a triple-double with 10 rebounds and eight assists for his first career double-double.

The story of the night, though, was redshirt senior Abayomi Iyiola notching his second straight double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds as he faced his former school after playing at Arkansas from 2019-21.

Hofstra played without the services of leading scorer, graduate student Zach Cooks, who missed the contest with an injury. Cooks leads the team with 17.4 points per game, while Ray (14.6 ppg), Estrada (13.8 ppg), sophomore Darlinstone Dubar (13.3 ppg), and senior Omar Silverio (11.8 ppg) all average in double figures. Iyiola leads Hofstra in rebounding with 8.1 caroms per contest and is also averaging 8.5 points per contest. Estrada is dishing out 5.3 assists per game to lead the Pride in that category.

Monmouth is off to a 10-2 start this season and has won three straight games. The Hawks are coming off a 77-66 win over Colgate on Sunday afternoon as George Papas led Monmouth with 30 points. Papas leads a quartet of Hawks in double figures with 17.0 points per game this season. Shavar Reynolds (15.8 ppg), Walker Miller (14.0 ppg), and Marcus McClary (10.9 ppg) are all averaging double figures as well.

This will be the 12th all-time meeting between Hofstra and Monmouth in a series that has been quite entertaining over the past few years. The Hawks lead the series, 6-5, but the Pride has won four straight meetings including a 96-88 win in West Long Branch, New Jersey last season. The first meeting in the series occurred during the 1983-84 campaign with Hofstra capturing a 77-43 victory.
