Lots to Celebrate for St. John’s in 82-64 victory over Colgate

The St. John’s Men’s Basketball team (8-2) had a lot to celebrate at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday as the team earned an 82-64 victory against Colgate. The first thing the team celebrated is the birthday of Head Coach Mike Anderson, who was celebrating his 62nd birthday.  In addition to that the team was able to celebrate a milestone as Junior wing Julian Champagnie recorded his 1,000-career point.

One of the trends for the Red Storm this season, and one of the reasons why the team will be successful as they head into BIG EAST Conference play into the New Year is the fact that they have bench players who can help the team with their positive play.

That trend continued as the bench was able to contribute 34 points in the victory. The game between St. John’s and Colgate is a part of the Gotham Classic, and the Red Storm will look to capture the Championship on Sunday against Pittsburgh at Madison Square Garden.

Champagnie was one of the leaders on the offensive side, as he was able to score 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. During the First Half of play the Junior winger became the 52nd player in the history of the school to reach the 1,000-point mark.

1495 Sports is proud to bring the following St. John’s Men’s Basketball Press Conference from 12/12. After the team’s 82-64 victory over Colgate featuring Aaron Wheeler and Julian Champagnie along with Head Coach Mike Anderson

Posh Alexander also impressed, netting 15 points, while adding seven boards and four assists and three steals. One of the bench leaders for the Red Storm was Rafael Pinzon, who had 14 points, three assists in 17 minutes of action.

For Colgate Jack Ferguson, Nicolas Louis-Jacques had eight points each and Oliver Lynch-Daniels had seven points.

Another of the big keys for the Red Storm in the victory over Colgate was the fact that they were able to play tough defensively. In addition to the Red Storm outrebounding the Raiders by a tally of 23-14.

St. John’s will have their final non-conference game against former BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh at Madison Square Garden on December 18. The tip-off between the two teams is set for 12 p.m. on FS1.
