Julian Champagnie Again Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

St. John’s junior wing Julian Champagnie has been named to his fourth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in as many opportunities this season, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.

Champagnie posted 20.0 points per game on 51.9 percent shooting (14-of-27), including a 58.3 percent (7-of-12) effort from beyond the arc, during a 1-1 week for the Johnnies.  The 2021 First Team All-BIG EAST selection also averaged 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals in a loss to No. 8 Kansas and a win over Fordham.

On Friday against the Jayhawks in the first-ever college basketball game against UBS Arena, Champagnie scored 20 of his team-high 24 points in the second half, helping St. John’s climb within three before Kansas pulled away late.  The Brooklyn native went 7-for-13 from the floor, including a career-best 6-for-9 effort from beyond the arc.

Two nights later against the Rams, Champagnie went 7-for-14 from the field to finish with 16 points in an 83-69 win over Fordham.  The Bishop Loughlin product has now scored 12 or more points in each of his last 33 appearances dating back to the start of his sophomore season and has netted 10 or more in his last 40 regular season tilts spanning back to his freshman year.

Through games played on Sunday, Champagnie, who led the BIG EAST in scoring a year ago, ranks second in the league and 13th nationally with 21.0 points per outing.  He also sits second in the conference in steals per game (2.0) while sitting just outside the top 10 in rebounding (7.1).

Champagnie and the Red Storm will begin the final stretch of an eight-game homestand on Thursday when they host Monmouth at Carnesecca Arena.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on FS1.
