Battle for Bragging rights, St. John’s defeats Fordham in 83-69 nail biter

In a College Basketball rivalry that dates back to 1909, the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team (6-2) defeated the Fordham Men’s Basketball team (6-4) in what was an intense and fast paced basketball game at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday night.

In front of a crowd of 3,951 fans cheering on the Red Storm, both teams had plenty of opportunities to shine in what was an epic clash. Leading the way for the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team was Posh Alexander, who showed great speed and agility as well as scoring prowess.

Alexander finished the night with a career-high 23 points, having a 11-for-16 nights from the field, while also adding five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Dylan Addae-Wusu also impressed for the Red Storm, was able to tally 11 points, dishing out a personal-best 11 assists, while also matching a career-high four steals. The night was a first for Dylan, who recorded his first career double double.

Julian Champagnie and Montez Mathis rounded out the scoring, as both finished with double figures with 16 points apiece. Champagnie was able to net 7-for-14 from the floor, while Mathis was able to make six of his 10 field goal tries.

St. John’s was impressive from end to end, as they were able to play some stellar defense along with grabbing some huge rebounds that was clutch to them earning the victory. The Red Storm recorded nine total blocks, while also outrebounding Fordham by a margin of 37-29.

Head Coach Mike Anderson inserted some fresh blood into the starting five by allowing Esahia Nyiwe into the line-up, Nyiwe impressed with his vertical leap, defensive prowess and overall ability, tallying seven points, eight boards and three blocks in his first Division 1 start.

Fordham, meanwhile, showed heart and grit keeping the game close during the final minutes of play. Leading the way for the Rams was Chuba Ohams, who had 20 points. Darius Quisenberry followed with 16 points.

Up next for the St. Joh’s Men’s Basketball team will be a game against Monmouth at Carnesecca Arena on Thursday night. The Tip between the two teams is set for 8:30 p.m. with the action to air on the FS1 Network.

As for Fordham they will play host to LIU on Thursday night with the tip set for 7:00 p.m.
