St. John’s Women’s Basketball Junior Guard Correa Captures BIG EAST Weekly Honor

 St. John’s University Women’s Basketball Junior guard Leilani Correa was among the student-athletes recognized by the BIG EAST in the conference’s first set of weekly awards announced on Monday, grabbing a spot on the five-player BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Correa paced the way for the Red Storm squad over its first two games, averaging 20.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Johnnies.

The Manchester, N.J., native kicked off the 2021-22 campaign by scoring 22 points in the Red Storm’s win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena. Correa made eight of her 14 tries from the floor, including a 3-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. Correa also grabbed three rebounds and two steals in the Johnnies’ win over the Knights.

Four days later against Stony Brook, Correa poured in a team-high 18 points, grabbed six boards and dished out a pair of assists. With 18 points against the Seawolves, Correa has reached double figures in 10 of her last 15 games, dating back to the 2020-21 season.

Correa and the Red Storm return to action on Wednesday evening, traveling to Temple for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Owls.
