The Washington Spirit have waited a long time to get themselves to the NWSL Championship. Most recently the ladies were able to defeat the North Carolina Courage on 11/7 the ladies were able to advance to the NWSL Semifinals against the OL Reign.
It has been a long time that the ladies have seen the playoffs, as it was during the 2014 and 2016 seasons that the team has made the playoffs. During the 2014 Season the team made their first NWSL Playoff appearance, falling to the Seattle Reign. Then in the 2016 campaign the team had one of the best seasons, making it to the NWSL Finals but sadly falling to the Western New York Flash.
Fast forward a few years and there has been a lot of changes to the team, as well as to the NWSL in general. The Spirit now have an Interim Head Coach in Kris Ward and are in the middle of trying to figure out who will be a part of the Ownership group of the team for years to come.
There has been a ton of heart and spunk shown by the team this season, as they have had to combine veterans with some of the younger stars to get to the point to where they can take on the OL Reign in the NWSL Semis on November 14.
Washington has been led by Aubrey Bledsoe in the cage, along with Ashley Hatch and Trinity Rodman on the scoring side of the field. The trio are currently up for awards from the NWSL for their fine play.
Bledsoe, who was second in the league in games played (22) and minutes played (1980), while also recording eight clean sheets. Hatch, meanwhile, is up for the league’s Most Valuable Player, as she was able to record 10 goals for the Spirit this season.
One of the fastest rising stars in the NWSL has been Trinity Rodman, scoring five or more goals and assists, while leading all rookies in both goals (6) and assist (6) throughout the season.
It isn’t every day that a team can beat another three times in one season, but that is the task that has been assigned to the Spirit as they take on the OL Reign. The two teams met on May 30, with the Spirit winning a 1-0 decision, then there was the forfeit that had happened between the two teams on September the 12.
Most recently the Spirit and the OL Reign had met on October 16, with the Spirit soaring to a 2-0 victory at the very same venue in where they will have their Semifinal match.
Helping to lead the way in that 2-0 victory was Hatch and Taylor Aylmer. The Spirit will hope for some spark of offense in trying to defeat the OL Reign on November 14.
