St. John’s Athletics and The Brandr Group (TBG) have launched a group licensing agreement that is available to all Red Storm student-athletes who represent the University’s 17 sports teams. Joining an exclusive list of only 19 Division I TBG partners, St. John’s now affords its student-athletes the opportunity to combine their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) with official trademarks and logos as part of the group licensing program.
“We are thrilled to offer this new opportunity for our student-athletes to help maximize their potential in the world of NIL,” said St. John’s Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. “The Brandr Group brings years of experience with group licensing to the table from its time working with players associations at the professional levels. Without a doubt, their expertise in this space will serve as another tremendous resource that is now available to St. John’s student-athletes.”
St. John’s partnership with The Brandr Group allows for the collective use of student-athletes’ NIL in licensing and marketing programs that are co-branded with Red Storm Athletics. Student-athletes will be able to voluntarily opt into the group licensing program, which requires at least three or more from any one sport or six or more from multiple sports in order to be marketed in groups. Participation does not restrict student-athlete’s individual NIL rights and they can still enter into agreements outside of the program.
“St. John’s is poised to see incredible success in the NIL space given their location, history and athletic and academic reputation,” said Wesley Haynes, TBG CEO. “Through this group licensing agreement, we can bring a wide-range of co-branded opportunities to St. John’s athletes. Kudos to the St. John’s athletic leadership for their foresight into Name, Image and Likeness. This early research and education of their student athletes will pay dividends for the players and for the fans as well.”
TBG, a brand management, marketing and licensing agency, will manage and administer the program as well as develop licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes. With extensive collective management experience for some of the world’s largest brands, TBG also manages the group rights program for the NFL, NBA and MLB players’ associations in the college space.
For decades, professional athletes have benefited from products that combine team logos and player names and numbers, with those sales accounting for a large portion of licensed sports merchandise sales. Fans can expect to be able to purchase official St. John’s merchandise, including team jerseys, with the name and number of their favorite Red Storm players provided they have joined the respective group licensing program once TBG enters into agreements with applicable school trademark licensees.
