The Washington Spirit have re-signed forward Ashley Sanchez to a long-term extension that will keep her with the club through 2024 with a club option for 2025.

Sanchez was drafted with the fourth overall draft pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft. During 2020, Sanchez played in all nine games for the Spirit and started all but one. She was given the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup Future Legend Award by the league and was named Young Player of the Year for the club. So far this season, she leads the league in shots (36) and shots on goal (22) and has been a key part of the Spirit’s balanced attack with four goals.

Spirit President of Sporting Operations Larry Best had this to say about the extension: “We’re excited that Ashley is continuing on this journey with our club in signing a multi-year contract. She’s part of a long list of our current players who have signed multi-year contracts which helps us continue on our path towards being the best football/soccer club in the world. We thank Ashely and all of our players for their commitment to our organization and look forward to bringing home a Championship trophy with this talented group of players.”

Heading into an important offseason that will see two new teams join the league, and the expansion drafts that come with those, Sanchez joins a list of 20 players who are under contract for next season.
